SASGE Biographies are made up of caring specialists dedicated to elevate the field of gynaecological endoscopy in South Africa.
Dr Viju Thomas
Dr Viju Thomas is the head of the Minimally Invasive Surgical (MIS) unit at the University of Stellenbosch. He works in both the private and public sectors, offering care in the areas of endometriosis, oncological surgery, and neuropelviology.
Dr Thomas spends much of his time training and teaching aspiring MIS surgeons in advanced laparoscopy and robotic surgery. He has authored many publications, serves as a reviewer for various international journals, and is a live surgeon at national and international conferences.

Dr Lusanda Shimange-Matsose
Dr Lusanda Shimange-Matsose is a Specialist Gynaecologist and board-certified Reproductive, Endocrine and Infertility Specialist from Steve Biko Academic Hospital, University of Pretoria (UP). Dr Shimange-Matsose is involved in clinical care in both the private and public sectors and is a lecturer at Witwatersrand University (WITS) training registrars in endoscopy and supervising MMed degrees.
She has published in local and international journals. She has a special interest in PCOS, fibroid and endometriosis-related infertility. She passionately subscribes to holistic care encompassing and improving women’s quality of life and regularly talks about women’s health to different stakeholders in her field of interest.

Dr Annelize Barnard
Annelize Barnard is a specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with an interest in Minimal Access Gynaecological Surgery, robotic surgery, urogynaecology and female pelvic imaging.
She obtained her pre- and postgraduate qualifications at Stellenbosch University and thereafter honed her skills in the MAGS unit at the same institution.
She has authored and co-authored many publications in local and international journals.
Annelize works in the public sector at Karl Bremer Hospital, where she heads the Gynaecology division and is keenly involved with the training of registrars and junior clinicians.


Dr Suran Ramphal
Dr Suran Ramphal is the head of the Gynaecology Endoscopic Unit at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital and the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine, University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. He trained in the field of Gynaecological Endoscopy at the Catholic University of Leuven in 1996, Endoscopic training unit In Hamburg in 2001 and The Warrel unit in Manchester in 2002. He has a special interest in laparoscopy in Urogynaecology and pelvic floor surgery
He has published in local and international Journals and has presented in both local and international meetings in gynaecological endoscopy. He is also a reviewer for international journals.
